Our First Day of 2011

January 1, 2011

One might think that I'd start my new year with a resolution about eating healthier or losing weight, but that is so not gonna happen... Quite the contrary; today was filled with many of our favorite things. As Dan often says, "Everything in moderation, including moderation." (Until recently I thought he came up with that on his own. As it turns out, that's a quote from Oscar Wilde. Despite that discovery, I'm going to forever attribute it to Dan because that's just how my brain works.)

This morning we each enjoyed our two most favorite donuts from Krispy Kreme. In case you ever want to buy us donuts, this is what we had: I had an apple-filed and a maple. Dan had an apple fritter and a glaze. (It's actually a tie between glaze and maple for Dan but he went with glaze this time.) Gaetano got a regular creme filled and a chocolate iced creme filled.

Dan's dad was born on New Year's Eve so we all went out to lunch at BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse. We had Sweet Pig and Great White pizza....yum! Dan had their Nutty Brunette beer, Gaetano had their crafted cream soda, and I had the cream soda with a shot of Malibu rum. We love their pizza so much, we brought home a medium for dinner tonight and/or lunch tomorrow. For dessert we ordered their pizookie trio and shared it among the seven of us. (Find out what a Pizookie is and see all their other desserts.)

We were so stuffed though that we didn't even want dinner. Well, Dan and I didn't but Gaetano did. So we had some of the 1/2 Mediterranean 1/2 Buffalo Chicken pizza. Gaetano had a piece of the Mediterranean and Dan and I split one slice of the Buffalo Chicken pizza. Oh and with dinner Dan had a Shiner Blonde. (I'm not jealous; I know he prefers nutty brunettes or he would not have married me!)

What, no pictures? Yeah, I know... I totally spaced taking pictures. While there's still a bunch of pizza in the fridge for tomorrow it won't look as good as it would have so you'll just have to check out their website's description and photos of BJ's pizzas if you want to see what they look like.

We decided to end the evening with another warm beverage as we've done the past two nights. When we were at Spec's on New Year's Eve we picked up a bottle of St. Elizabeth's™ Allspice Dram.

Last night, while we were waiting for the Pumpkin Pie Chai Toddy to heat up, we tasted one drop of the allspice dram. Oh wow, my gums went numb! We knew right then that it was not a drink to be sipped but one to add to tea or maybe cider. So tonight, we made what we're calling Dan's Jamaican Spiced Cider (shown above).

Let me tell you, this is one strong flavor. Next time I have a sore throat, I am going to gargle with a bit of this stuff to numb it. Allspice supposedly helps with indigestion and gas, so I'll have to keep it in mind for that too.

Here's a closeup of the label in case you want to find some or give Dan's Jamaican Spiced Cider a try. The back of the St. Elizabeth's™ Allspice Dram label reads:

From the origins in the tropical hills and valleys of Jamaica, the allspice berry has for generations been prized for its exceptional taste of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg and a pepper note that dazzles the palate. The allspice liqueur known in classic cocktails as "Pimento Dram", brings together the fine pot-still rum and allspice berries of Jamaica. Enjoy St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram in classic cocktails, Wassail and other punches, mulled wine, continental and island cuisine.

Here's to a healthy, happy and prosperous 2011... Cheers!
